2015 BMW i8

BMW is one of the most famous car manufacturers in the world; this company was founded in 1916 in Munich, and its name stands for Bayerische Motoren Werke, meaning “Bavarian Motor Works”. Everyone knows that the Germans make some of the best cars, at least where technology and safety are concerned. BMW has also shown interest in fuel efficiency and protecting the environment of fuel emissions, and one of the results of that interest was the BMW i8 concept car first introduced in 2011. The first model to hit the streets has also only recently been unveiled, and it will become available by the end of the year.

Today however, we want to talk about the latest model, the 2015 BMW i8, which will actually be launched at the middle of next year in 2014, but be presented as a 2015 model. What’s impressive about the 2015 BMW i8 is that you’re not sure what to call it other than versatile; it is clearly a sports car, but it is also a hybrid, and it has some of the most advanced technology on the market. It may not be the most performing hybrid car where autonomy is concerned, but it will certainly impress even the cynics. Manufacturers say that this plug-in hybrid should be able to be autonomous for about 22 miles. Now we’d like to hear some racing car news some day saying that the first hybrid racing car was created, or even a fully-electric one, but it looks like we’ll have to wait some more, because the technologies are not so advanced as to permit the creation of an autonomous, and powerful car that would stand up to today’s racing competition standards. Until better racing car news, we just have to follow the evolution of the hybrids and electrics and hope to see some changes.

The body style of the 2015 BMW i8 is of two-door coupe, and this year’s model is 4.6 inches wider and two inches longer than the previous one. The exterior is very dynamic and appealing, and the car features scissor doors; the car has backseats as well, but don’t count on too much space for adults in there. The hybrid part of the car is fitted with a 6.0 kWh lithium-ion battery which allows it to ride smoothly yet well responsive. The engine is a 1.5-liter, three-cylinder that produces 228 horsepower.

There haven’t been too many drive tests so far, but BMW claims the 2015 BMW i8 can reach 60 mph in less than 4.5 seconds; when the car runs its electric motor, it can reach about 75 mph, but the three-cylinder engine takes it up to 155 mph. Moreover, when you switch to engine mode, you benefit from six-speed automatic transmission. The car is not impressive just through technology use, but also for being much lighter than expected; the manufactures used a lot of lightweight materials such as carbon fiber in the central tub, aluminum in the running gear and Gorilla Glass which is much thinner, but still very resistant. So far, it looks like the 2015 BMW i8 is a new type of car altogether, and it will definitely turn heads wherever it goes.
